CCSI: A Success Story

The Houston Police Department’s Mental Health Division serves our citizens in several areas. The Chronic Consumer Stabilization Initiative (CCSI) helps citizens who have mental health related issues as well as multiple contacts with law enforcement. CCSI reaches out to these citizens by helping them access available programs and organizations in the community who treat and support their diagnoses. CCSI also follows up with the consumers to ensure they are getting the help they need. This program is voluntary and benefits the community by helping the consumer live a successful life and reduces their repeated contact with law enforcement.

Meet Michael:

Michael came to CCSI as a referral by the North Patrol Division. Michael had over 12 police contacts within a two-year period. The police contacts resulted in three emergency detention orders. Michael would call the police, stating unknown people were living in his house. When officers would arrive at his residence, no one would be there. Michael also stated that he had a family of bears living under his house and he would sit outside his residence with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun waiting for the bears to come out.

Care Coordinator G. Pequeno and Senior Police Officer Leon Moulton attempted several times to speak with Michael, but he refused our services. Finally, Michael decided that he could use the services of CCSI. Michael signed up on September 11th, 2018, and with continued intensive case management, he has become one of CCSI’s success stories.

Since beginning services with CCSI, Michael has not been admitted into any mental health facility or had any negative police contacts. Michael is now with Care Coordinator J. James, who continues to follow up with him on a weekly basis. He is currently medication-compliant, and attends psychiatric appointments as directed.

Michael is a great example of the many successes within the CCSI Program.

Happy Pride!
