Police Officer Oscar Cavazos of the Central Division received the CIT Officer of the Quarter Award for saving the life of a woman who attempted to commit suicide. The woman, distraught because she believed her boyfriend was cheating on her, walked into the bathroom, smashed a mirror, and used a shard of the glass to slash her wrist. She fell to the floor with blood gushing from the cut. The boyfriend called 9-1-1 and waited outside for the police and ambulance to arrive.
The boyfriend flagged Officer Cavazos down and quickly explained the situation. Officer Cavazos ran inside the apartment where he found the girlfriend on the floor, bleeding profusely, and unresponsive. Officer Cavazos quickly made a makeshift tourniquet with a towel and held pressure until the ambulance arrived. The ambulance stabilized then transported the woman to Northwest Memorial Hospital. Officer Cavazos followed up at the hospital to ensure that hospital staff knew this was a suicide attempt and to complete the paperwork for an emergency detention if needed. The woman survived due to the actions of Officer Cavazos.
